K-12DB Mini10 No.2 - The Parent Connection – Help Your Students Make the Grade

Below you will find a menu of multimedia files and handouts that address how the K-12 Databases Program supports parental involvement. You are encouraged to use these materials as best suits the needs of your audience. Materials can be used in their entirety or in parts. You are also free to download and save materials separately for use outside this K-12DB Mini10 web page.

K-12DB Mini10 No. 2 covers:

• How to access the state funded K-12 Databases at home
• The variety and extent of content in the K-12 Databases
• The benefits of helping students to use subscription databases
  

Example uses of K-12DB Mini10 No. 2 materials include:

1. Display of videos and/or distribution of handouts during
• PTO or PTA meetings
• Open House events
• School Board meetings
• Orientations
• Library or school events with parent and family participation
2. Links to K-12DB Mini10 No. 2 materials from district parent portals and/or other campus/district web pages, newsletters, and flyers

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your feedback is key to the success of this program. Please remember to complete the Mini10 Survey No. 2 located in Step 7 at the end of this Mini10.

Facilitating a session for parents on the K-12 Databases program?

If you choose to facilitate a 10 minute session using the K-12 DBMini10 No.2 materials, the instructions and presenter notes will explain preparation and delivery of the content. All other supporting materials are included in steps 2 through 7.

Two videos are available to help describe and promote the K-12 Databases Program to parents and school community members.

Parent Connection Video One describes the K-12 Databases Program and features an interview with a parent. (Duration = 4:33 minutes).
Parent Connection Video Two describes and models how the K-12 Databases can be used for homework assignments and research. (Duration = 7:15 minutes).

The Make the Grade Flyer is a one page item that can be used to quickly communicate usernames, passwords, and contact information. Pair this flyer with a K-12 Databases brochure and K-12 Databases bookmarks for a quick and easy way to promote online resources to families from your campus or district.

Find informational flyers about the resources included in the state funded program.

The Britannica Flyer briefly describes the resources and features available within the Britannica Online School Edition. Explore the five encyclopedias, the dictionary, atlas, timelines, videos, and more.
The EBSCO Databases Flyer provides brief descriptions of each resource. Discover the variety of subjects and materials available.

Letters to parents are a great way to spread the word about the K-12 Databases Program.

One way to let school community members know about the K-12 Databases Program is to distribute a letter to parents and families. Here is a sample letter you can modify for your campus or district. Consider possibilities like including this letter with newsletters already scheduled for distribution to families or add the letter to other mailings sent to students' homes.

Distribute brochures and bookmarks to raise awareness about the K-12 Databases Program.

The K-12 Databases Brochure describes the importance of the state funded online resources to educators and families.
The K-12 Databases Bookmarks are a great way to remind students, educators, and families about the program and provide login information for access.
